The Artistic Bowls Club Member
Transforming Old Bowls into Whimsical Masterpieces
Discover the Fascinating World of Decorated Bowls
Kingsthorpe Bowling Club has members from all walks of life and professions and who have many talents. Among its members, there’s one individual who stands out, a true artist (although John says he’s not artistic, others will disagree) with a passion for playing bowls and creativity with his lawn bowls art.
Meet John Churchman: The Bowls Magician
John has been a member of the club since 2011. His love for the game of bowls is matched only by his artistic flair. While most club members focus on perfecting their bowling technique, John has a unique hobby: painting and decorating old bowls. His home workshop is a treasure trove of colours, brushes, and imagination.
John’s recent “new-found” talent stems back to the dark days when he was caring, 24/7, for his partner who was suffering from cancer. During this time, which also coincided with COVID lockdowns, John came across some 10-pin bowling balls that had been painted and he thought “I could do that” and his passion for transforming old lawn bowls balls was ignited.

From Plain to Extraordinary: John’s Transformation Process
- The Canvas: John starts with a weathered, battle-worn bowl—its once-glossy surface now faded by years of play. These bowls have seen countless games, witnessed victories and defeats, and carried the laughter of friends. John believes they deserve a second chance.
- Themes and Inspiration: John’s themes are as diverse as the seasons. He draws inspiration from nature, folklore, and more. His favourite motifs include spiders, ladybirds, and bees. Each bowl becomes a canvas for his creativity.
- Meticulous Detailing: Armed with tiny brushes and a steady hand, John brings his chosen theme to life. The spider’s delicate legs, the ladybird’s crimson spots, and the bee’s intricate wings—all meticulously painted. The bowls transform from mundane to magical.
- Sealing the Magic: John coats each work of bowl art with yacht varnish, to help ensure that rain, sun, and time won’t dull his artistry. These bowls are no longer mere sporting equipment; they’re conversation starters and cherished keepsakes.

The Club’s Reaction
John’s creations have become legendary within the club. During club games and tournaments, players gather around his display, marvelling at the tiny creatures adorning the bowls. Visitors exclaim, “Who knew bowls could be so enchanting?”
Conclusion
John’s legacy extends beyond the greens. His bowls are more than objects; they’re expressions of joy, imagination, community and memories of caring for a loving partner.
John says “I do it for enjoyment and it also recycles old bowls that the club has and can’t be sold. I do not take private orders due to other commitments and only help the club on a small scale when I have the time.”
So, next time you step onto Kingsthorpe Bowling Club’s outdoor green, take a closer look at those seemingly ordinary bowls—you might just find a ladybird winking back at you!
